I have been cleaning information technology with Brasso and much elbow grease with tiny tooth brushes dipped in warm h2o and and then rinsed with a soft cloth.

I need to know if at that place is a booklet bachelor that will tell me how to have all of information technology apart every bit I take the sides and back off simply I need to get into where the keys are because at that place is much gunk on them. I have Dummy keys which I take bought and would also know if they tin can exist made into existent keys instead of but the dummy key. Any help that I can receive will be nearly valuable and I would appreciate any assist.

A. I am in the same boat. I bought a cheap sand equalizer and used crushed walnut shells from Harbor Freight. That worked smashing on the brass. Later that I used a wire brush wheel on an electric polisher and then cloth pads on the aforementioned polisher with jeweler'south polish (green stick) on them. That shined it upward bully.

As far as taking the thing apart and trying to ready it, you can start with a repair transmission that you can notice on ebay. Just search for information technology. Only, unless you are super handy, y'all won't be able to do it. I had to finally pack it all upward and haul information technology to a identify in Houston that does them. Its going to be expensive, simply it's for my father-in-law and he's nearly ninety years old. He bought it xx years agone and had planned to restore information technology simply he wouldn't spend the money. Well, he'due south going to see it done.

Skilful luck to y'all.

Q. I'chiliad restoring a National Cash Register with a case made of very ornate red brass. Being well-nigh ane hundred years one-time, the instance is tarnished to the betoken where it is nigh black. Many polishes will remove the tarnish on the flat surfaces, however in the deep crevices the tarnish only tin't be reached with polish. Is there some type of chemical solution in which I tin can dip the parts in society to remove the tarnish.

Thanks for your fourth dimension and consideration.

A. Tom,

Get a bottle of Tarn-X [affil. link to info/product on Amazon]. This is a chemical cleaner for contumely that will remove the tarnish without dissentious the brass. Just dip your parts into a bowl of this solution and use a soft bristled brush to scrub the recessed areas. Unless the surface is sealed in some fashion (articulate lacquer or polyurethane) the brass will tarnish once more in a few months. Good Luck!

A. Nosotros appreciate Tom S's help, just this information is not entirely accurate. The Tarn-X site includes this FAQ:

"Is Tarn-X condom to utilise on brass?
No, Tarn-X is not safe to utilise on brass. This is considering brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, and the acids in Tarn-X effect zinc."

Notwithstanding, there is a split up production called Tarn-X Contumely Glaze.

A. Tom D: I have tried Tarn-10 and have had little success except with silvery...you might try liquid toilet basin cleaner (toilet bowl cleaner [affil. link to info/production on Amazon]) which contains Hydrochloric Acrid...launder off as shortly equally you use it but it will definitely remove tarnish from Brass and copper. I apply it with 0000 steel wool [affil. link to info/product at Rockler] which won't scratch the metal. Needless to say (just I'll say it anyhow) wear Safe Gloves [affil. link to info/product on Amazon] and don't breath the fumes. After you remove the tarnish smooth with a Cape Cod Metal Polishing Cloth [affil. link to info/product on Amazon] and sentinel the polish come out!

Good luck...

A. It is possible that the original finish was a lacquer, which was thin on the flat surfaces, thicker in the textured surface. Soaking the part in a hot alkaline solution, or trisodium phosphate [affil. link to info/production on Amazon] or Sodium Metasilicate or some solvent to remove this lacquer before attempting to polish it might aid.

A. At that place were several different finishes used on those registers which had the cast brass cabinets. Some were vivid brass, and some were "antiqued". I remember antique is what you're looking for. Here's a process which volition piece of work, although it might best exist washed by a metal finishing store.

Clean the brass panels back to "as-bandage" new. This will crave some combination of organic solvents, stiff brushes, contumely polish and buffing wheels. When perfectly clean, dip in a ii% solution of Liver of Sulphur [affil. link to info/product on Amazon] until dark brown/black all over. Rinse, dry out, then vitrify lightly over the loftier spots, leaving as much/piddling dark in recesses as you like. Finally coat with a clear acrylic.

A. I know where you are! I have restored 200 brass cash registers.
First buy some silica sand and blast them. won't hurt anything even the indicators.
Later on blasting them, vitrify them with a bar polish, them clean them with some soapy pressurized foam, then render to the polishing booth and shine it with a bar of red rouge. clean again then spray with a clear lacquer. Works every time!

A. I restore brass NCRs as a hobby and polishing them is not an easy and fast process. Offset, every piece of brass must come off. Adjacent y'all have to go all of the dirt off by putting some water on it and Comet or Lime Away and scrub it with a tooth brush. Next you accept to get the old lacquer off the brass past putting paint stripper on it and leave information technology on for fifteen minutes then pour boiling water on elevation of information technology and, instantly after, carefully grinding it off with a powered brass castor. I similar to use a paw held grinder with a brass wire brush in place of the grinder. Do not press as well deep into the brass -- all you want to exercise is have the lacquer off it. It volition brighten up a ton, but that's non the end. Then with a demote buffer you lot demand two unlike types of buffing abrasives. First vitrify the brass with tripoli then finish information technology with rouge. Both on unlike cotton wheels. Finish it all of with a thin layer of lacquer and there you become. Hope this helps.

Servicing NCR Drawer so information technology shuts

August xv, 2017

Q. I know I may need to bring together a social club and pay a fee, but I am very new to this.

I just purchased a very rare fine curl #5 National brass candy store cash register.

It was fabricated in 1903 with a number #808206 on the face and under the drawer.

This machine is missing the height purchase plate and the drawer will not latch shut. Otherwise everything seems to work well.

I am looking for advise on how to service/fix the drawer so information technology works properly.

I know I will probably have to take the sides and dorsum off to perform the fix, but am looking for advise to ensure I don't crusade additional problems.

If y'all can assist me with this I volition be very grateful.

If you crave a fee please let me know.

Q. I restored my outset NCR 20 years ago. It was lacquered and I was told to purchase a Christmas wreath plastic container and fill it with h2o and a lot of Powdered Tide clothes detergent. Soak the piece like the back of the machine over night. To my surprise, information technology removed every bit of the lacquer without whatsoever scrubbing with no damage! Attempt information technology! Information technology Works!

I tin can't seem to polish it without leaving night residue in the engraving lines. I would beloved to notice out how and I am so happy to pass forth my tide trick!! No damage!

Where can I buy parts? I demand key rings and money flags to modify from British pounds and pence! Too what gets the light-green verdigris off? Thank you for your help and I have five to restore plus a nickel full size and nickel candy store. I besides have 20 antique telephones to restore. I also have a valuable 19th century binocular microscope to restore that needs to be re-tarnished where the lacquer was worn off. Can I do this? I didn't realize that polishing this would devaluate it!

A. I worked for NCR in the 1960s and 70s. At that time the huge (25,000,000? sq ft) Dayton factory was full of obsolete parts. Millions upon millions of parts.

By the late 1970s mechanical greenbacks registers were obsolete, having been replaced by electronics. The Dayton manufacturing plant continued to make some other products, but was much larger than needed, so information technology was gradually demolished over the adjacent 15-20 years. The need for replacement parts was all but non-existent, and then AFAIK the parts inventory was sold for scrap.

An on line search volition take you to some hobbyists who may have some spare parts however.

Q. I take an early, circa 1900 NCR cash register that is nickel plated over cast iron. Fortunately, the nickel is in good shape, but needs to be polished to match a reproduction top sign that I purchased to install on the register [the reproduction is nickel plating over contumely, with a gloss clear coat]. I had to strip gold paint off the register when I bought information technology; the previous possessor had spray painted the whole register gold to make it look similar brass! Luckily, I believe this had helped preserve the nickel finish - which is now stripped, but has a non-shiny, ho-hum silver advent.

0757-1

I take polished contumely, stainless, and copper earlier, just have never polished nickel - I know information technology is plated to an unknown thickness, and do not desire to over smoothen or ruin the plating - then need a gloss clear glaze to preserve the polished end. Advise will exist profoundly appreciated!

A. Hi Gary.
That's a cute slice of equipment but I don't recollect information technology ever looked like your sign, and don't think it's possible to polish it to that await. For i affair, I'yard non sure that sign is nickel plated & clear coated because it seems to have the slightly "blue-ish" tint of chrome plating rather than the slightly "yellowish-ish" tint of even fresh nickel plating.

Before trying a more than abrasive polishing or buffing compound, I'd advise trying something like Barkeeper'southward Friend. It contains oxalic acid and a very mild annoying. Mild acids like oxalic acid and sulfamic acid can deliquesce nickel oxides (tarnish) without substantially dissolving nickel metal.
